Our Instructor ~ John White
John White is a highly respected expert on judging and goat type. He served as an American Dairy Goat Association (ADGA) Linear Appraiser for 18 years. In this capacity he earned the respect of breeders nationwide through the accuracy of his evaluations and his willingness to share his expertise. At the 2016 ADGA Convention, he was recognized with the Mary L. Farley award, ADGA's highest honor, for his outstanding work on behalf of the goat industry. While he was at the Convention, he continued sharing his knowledge by teaching a class on fitting and showmanship that received rave reviews from participants. He currently serves as co-chair on the Linear Appraisal Committee, the committee that oversees the evaluation of goats in herds throughout the nation. According to ADGA, he has been “invaluable as an appraiser, a trainer, and an educator about the form and function of dairy goats.”
Type Conference Information
A Type Conference is an opportunity to learn how to apply concepts from the ADGA scorecard, such as "dairy strength," when evaluating goats. Attendees will attend a morning session where you will receive instruction in the scorecard categories, followed by an afternoon session where you will apply those categories when evaluating goats.
During the morning session, you will receive instruction in the ADGA Scorecard categories, which includes general appearance, dairy strength, body capacity, and mammary system. Participants will learn how to evaluate goat conformation in comparison to the “ideal” dairy goat. In the process you will also learn how to determine the quality of different aspects of a goat’s conformation, such as mammary system attachments, and the relationship of conformation to a goat’s health and longevity as a milker. During the afternoon session, Mr. White will demonstrate how to evaluate goats using animals that have been volunteered for use by club members. This session will provide participants with a valuable opportunity to apply concepts learned during the morning session. Throughout both sessions you will have opportunities to ask questions of Mr. White and benefit from his extensive knowledge and experience. Regardless of whether you intend to show, breed, or simply enjoy your home milkers, this Type Conference will provide you with information that will help increase your success with dairy goats. |
