SCDGA is hosting this hands-on A.I. Clinic with instruction by Jena Williams! We are thrilled to have Jena joining us to share her knowledge from years of experience. If you don't know Jena, please check out her website: http://www.urbanacresfarm.com/
Jena has a very successful herd of Nigerian Dwarf and Nubian Dairy Goats. She has been breeding for many years and involved with teaching and mentoring both the youth and several new breeders. Jena has had much success in utilizing artificial insemination within her herd for many years and we are honored to have her share her knowledge and skills with our goat community.
The clinic will begin at 10am with basic A.I. information including the equipment and tools needed. The instruction segment of this clinic will be condensed so that we can offer a more hands-on type class. When you register for this clinic, you will receive instruction on the syncing protocol to use on your doe so that she will be ready to conceive when inseminated at the clinic. Jena will explain how to inseminate your own doe and would like to encourage the attendees to try inseminated on their own, but she will be available to do the insemination for you at an additional fee. You will need medication to synchronize your does heat so that she is ready to conceive on the day and time of the clinic. The following medications will be needed prior to the protocol date of October 8th:
1 CIDR per goat
CIDR applicator
Lutalyse (prescription from Vet)
PG600 (prescription from Vet), PG600 is delicate, so if you're not using in entirety, it must be kept frozen once dosed into syringes. Because of the size and cost of this medication, it would be a good option to purchase and split this among multiple breeders - so reach out to friends planning to attend.
These medications are given Intramuscular. If you have never given an intramuscular injection, check out this link to learn how! How to Give an Intramuscular Injection.
It is important that you plan ahead for this clinic and acquire the tools needed to A.I. your doe, prior to attending the clinic. You must have your own tools to A.I. your goat at the clinic. Tools will not be shared due to bio-security. It is recommended to bring your own stanchion however, if you don't have a portable stand, there will be stands you can use.
You can purchase your tools anywhere but here is a list of recommended tools with links to purchase. At a minimum these are the items you must have:
AI Gun
Sheaths
Non-spermicidal Sterile Lubricant
Speculum
Light
Straw Cutter
